Designers Frank Slesinski and Serena Brosio collaborated on the charming living room in the Gatehouse. “One of the main things we did was add a window seat, which looks like it should always have been here,” Slesinski says. “Our whole goal with this space was basically to turn the lights on in the room, bring in the garden that’s outside, and kind of have an experience of a breath of fresh air,” Brosio says. Asap/ is a collaborative design practice founded in 2011 and based in Los Angeles, with a second office in Buffalo, New York, USA. We seek to identify and advance design opportunities to develop the art and craft of design at all scales — from tableware to entire cities, while also reinterpreting and re-energizing programmatic imperatives. Our work is devoted to understanding and contributing to existing cultural and architectural contexts while deploying advanced design and construction technology in ways appropriate to contemporary life.

A Thibault wall covering graces the entry, and a Fibreworks runner leads guests up the stairs. A brick-walled patio became a party-ready outdoor kitchen and dining area thanks to Douglas R. Sanicola of Outdoor Elegance. Sanicola and Monique Wood installed Caesarstone countertops fabricated by Carlito’s Way Stone to create a functional space for outdoor entertaining. Designer Mark Hermogeno paid tribute to Silver Queen Susanna Bransford Emery-Holmes in the kitchen, butler’s pantry, family room, powder room, and mudroom. “We had thought, What if she actually came back to life and asked us to remodel the space? “We wanted to concentrate on polished nickels and polished chromes to get that silver feel back in,” he says of the fixtures, hardware, and lighting by Kohler and Kallista.

The Future of Architecture: BioDiverCities and Nature-based Solutions

Wallpaper was added to the ceiling and the backs of the bookcases, and heavy wood blinds were replaced with soft draperies and Roman shades to make the space feel lighter. The firm used a mix of fabrics and wall coverings by Ralph Lauren Home from Designers Guild throughout the space. FreelandBuck is a full service architecture design practice formed in 2009 and based in Los Angeles.

Urban planners consider street layouts, building types, open spaces, infrastructure, and other amenities when designing vibrant communities. Students will use their own neighborhoods, as well as examples from around the world, to learn about urban design. They will then design and build their own piece of a neighborhood using 3D design software. Individual projects will come together at the end of the week to create an ideal neighborhood.

Always adapting and evolving, our buildings strive to craft an individual response to site, budget and, of course, client – so there’s no such thing as a signature building, and no such thing as two similar clients. It is endlessly adaptable and evolving, able to thrive in nearly any situation and abstain from obsolescence. For this reason no signature building can ever realize its full potential. We also love to play with the connection between human beings and their environments. In addition, being a pole of attraction for many celebrities, architectural offices have thrived in designing creative residential homes throughout the city.

This program will visit some of the best museums New York City has to offer and also look at examples of museums around the world. Students will consider how design helps visitors learn and engage their imagination to create a museum that showcases a collection of objects they love. Beam, truss, arch, suspension, and moveable bridges support weight and span great distances. Through interactive discussions, experiments, and small building projects, students will learn about these structural marvels.

The + signifies an approach that looks at the whole combination of interrelated parts and that architecture is more than drawings and an arrangement of building materials. It includes the process of collaboration with clients, specialist consultants and builders. The Best Colleges for Architecture ranking is based on key statistics and student reviews using data from the U.S. This year's rankings have introduced an Economic Mobility Index, which measures the economic status change for low-income students. ACT/SAT scores have been removed from rankings to reflect a general de-emphasis on test scores in the college admissions process. The Cathedral does have some interesting artwork, including the towering bronze doors by LA-based sculptor Robert Graham topped by a modern interpretation of Our Lady.

We focus on public space and hope to bring more meaningful experience through our thinking. At the meantime, we don’t mind participating in commercial projects, but we look forward to collaborating clients with similar values to create win-win works that benefit public interest. At the center of the Museum Courtyard, an exuberant fountain and its more contemplative counterpart in an adjacent courtyard embody the history of California with spectacular marble boulders from the Sierra Nevada.

Horticultural techniques throughout combine function with pleasure, artifice with nature, and modern technologies such as those required for planting over structure, with ancient horticultural practices such as pleaching. Samatha Williams’s Tearoom in the Gatehouse is brimming with vintage charm and elegant accents. Working with Jacqueline Black and Michelle Porreca, Williams brought in a Chinoiserie wall covering to give the space a garden-like atmosphere. They also installed a grass cloth ceiling treatment and sisal rug to add texture. Maria Videla-Juniel, who designed the primary bathroom of the main house, also devised a welcoming entry to the Gate House.

The J. Paul Getty Center sits on a ridgeline of the Santa Monica Mountains overlooking Los Angeles, with extensive views of the San Bernadino Mountains, San Gabriel Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. The 110-acre site brings together the diverse programs and collections of this iconic art institution. Reflective of the Getty’s stature and historical focus of its collections, the complex is a reinterpretation of a classic Italian Renaissance villa and garden as a contemporary public arts institution in southern California.

Students will visit several bridges in New York City, then put their new knowledge to the test as they create a final bridge of their own design. With a focus on free-hand sketching, this course develops architectural drawing skills. Students are introduced to a range of drawing techniques, including one- and two-point perspectives and methods for shading and rendering different materials. The course visits different spaces throughout New York City to practice observational on-site sketching and can help students create work for their portfolios. New Practices New York will reflect on AIANY’s competition, which has recognized and elevated new and innovative architecture and design practices in New York City since 2006, with a particular focus on the winners of the competition’s 2020 cycle.

Designer Ashleigh Miranda focused on juxtaposing technology and earthy elements in her moody media room. “I really wanted to showcase state-of-the-art technology but in a way that was grounded and spoke to our primitive nature.” Cutting-edge tech from Bang & Olufsen, Lutron, and JoshAI is balanced by curvaceous seating and unique art. Designer Lara Hovanessian packed plenty of bold design elements into the powder room and adjacent lounge. A moody House of Hackney floral wall covering lines the dressing area, which leads to a powder room accented with a Kelly Wearstler’s Graffito II from Walnut Wallpaper. A black-and-white triangular mosaic tile floor by Artistic Tile from Mission Tile West puts a contemporary twist on the classic checkered pattern. Since its founding, Assembledge+ has been pursuing an architecture driven by a commitment to collaboration and craftsmanship to create enduring environments that are user-focused, innovative, and sustainable.

Built in 16 weeks using 316 interlocking concrete panels, the theatre opened in 1963 with a curved 86-foot wide screen. The unprepossessing brown brick exterior of the Bradbury Building (304 Broadway at West 3rd Street) in Downtown LA, doesn't hint at its spectacular interior. Unlike the buildings on the previous pages, this is not one that you can appreciate on a drive by.

Toward this end, in their conceptual plans, the architects have envisioned a building that doesn’t exceed the height of the adjacent NASM buildings. “The BLC identity is purposefully not an extrusion of NASM, but rather a pavilion-like form surrounded by landscape,” the CFA report stated. In Washington D.C., new details have emerged about the Bezos Learning Center, an education and cultural center coming to the site of the demolished Gyo Obata–designed restaurant pavilion not far from the National Mall.

This course explores the features, surface materials, and design options for rooftop deck systems and provides an overview of recommended planning and installation guidelines. Cynthia Silverman created a nursery fit for a prince or princess, incorporating golden accents and whimsical touches, such as the hot-air balloon light and animal figurines. Jerome Thiebault created a polished and petite bathroom complete with storage and a shower. Troweled cement plaster was applied to the walls, and handcrafted Zia tile adds pattern to the floor.

Maria Videla-Juniel turned the primary bath into a sumptuous retreat with hues of soft blue and brown. Thibaut wall coverings and fabrics were used for the walls and windows, and the elegant shagreen-covered vanities are accented with gleaming fixtures by P.E. Videla-Juniel and project manager Cheryl Hardy also installed a striking shower clad in herringbone stone tile. Bursts of hot pink and apple green energize Steven Cordrey’s design for the home’s veranda. Hand-beaded light fixtures illuminate the seating areas, which feature tables and chairs from Janus et Cie’s Amalfi Coast outdoor collection. The landmark mansion was built in 1902 by architect Joseph J. Blick for Gertrude Potter Daniels, who paid $15,000 for the shingle-style home.
