For their final project, students will design and build their own scale model for a house of the future. The class will explore various techniques to support the treehouse and create ladders, swings, furniture, and other fun details to scale. The MAK Center is a unique constellation of modern buildings designed by architect R.M. The MAK Center for Art and Architecture, Los Angeles is a contemporary, experimental, multi-disciplinary center for art and architecture and is headquartered in three architectural landmarks by the Austrian-American architect Rudolph M. Schindler. Founded in 1994, the MAK Center is a Los Angeles-based 501(c)3 non-profit organization and the California satellite of the MAK – Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna.

A Guide to Project Awards

In August 1994 FOSH entered into a cooperation agreement with the MAK – Austrian Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna, for the creation of the MAK Center for Art and Architecture, L.A., at the Schindler House. We now have an ambitious program of exhibitions, publications and other public programming entirely in accord with FOSH’s initial intentions. Learn more about the Schindler House through a series of interpretive audio tours by artists, architects, and writers. Visitors are invited to move, observe, and perceive the house through instructional exercises, fictional meanderings, and guided journeys. The building was designed originally by Sumner Hunt and embellished upon by one of his draftsmen, George Wyman, as a commission for gold-mining millionaire Lewis L. Bradbury. Bradbury died before the building was finished, but his inspiration, based on an 1887 science fiction novel, has become a National Historic Landmark.

In the 1920s and early 1930s especially the house was the focus of constant social gatherings; there are reports of people drifting in at all hours. Later, it was largely Mrs. Schindler’s initiative that established the house as a mecca for left-wing political activity in Los Angeles. If you would like to understand more about this ranking list and learn how your firm can achieve a presence on it, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at Architizer also powers firm directories for a number of AIA (American Institute of Architects) Chapters nationwide, including the official directory of architecture firms for AIA New York. This ranking list will be updated annually, taking into account new achievements of Los Angeles architecture firms throughout the year. In 2002 Pacific Theatres built up a state-of-the-art 14-screen multiplex movie theatre, ArcLight Cinemas, around the dome, including a restaurant, bar and gift shop.

The striking cacti and succulent garden serves as a model of plant selection based on extreme environmental constraints. The result is a landscape feature completely non-dependent upon irrigation, a pedagogic tale of the fragility—and resilience—of the natural world. To this day, the Getty remains a treasured Los Angeles landmark and is known worldwide as a destination for art, architecture, and landscape. The landscape has withstood the strains of the most recent California drought due to painstaking selection of species and materials which would not only withstand but thrive under harsh conditions.

Like the gardens, the Getty fountains refer to both the natural context of southern California and the cultural legacy of a new world institution with its roots in the old world. Several long water basins with jets are descendants of the alamedas, or irrigation ditches of southern California and their numerous abstractions in the canals and reflecting pools of Italy, Spain, and France. The Amphora Fountain, carved into the travertine walls above the Central Garden, uses an ancient form to create a modern grotto. Although historically shaded and damp, this new version of the grotto serves as a vessel to capture and transform the southern California light. Kids are the experts in this program focusing on the design of parks and playgrounds.

“I wanted you to feel like you were transported to another time and place,” Scheff says. As one of the country’s oldest house and garden tours, the Pasadena Showcase House of Design benefits the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts, an all-volunteer organization that contributes to arts and music nonprofits in Southern California. The event draws more than 25,000 guests each year and offers several dining spaces, including Roe Japanese Fusion, the Tudor Rose Bistro, and Wattle & Daub Tavern. The Shops at the Showcase offer an array of merchants, from handmade jewelry to artisanal chocolates, and are also home to the Shops’s Wine & Cheese Bar.

Upon completing program registration as a “scholarship applicant”, you will automatically receive a confirmation email which includes a link to the Scholarship Application. If you are selected to receive a scholarship, you will be notified by email within two weeks of the due date. Thank you to the generous supporters who committed time, energy and resources to make this project possible.

The Getty Center is a contemporary arts organization about European art, located in the Mediterranean climate of Los Angeles. It seemed only appropriate to create landscape spaces inspired by the larger Mediterranean context of Spain, France and Italy. Not surprisingly, Italian Renaissance hillside villas inspired the architect’s concept for the composition, where architecture meets terrain with stepped terraces, gardens and courtyards.

“I’m all about gardens connecting the architecture into the landscape,” landscape architect Timothy John Palcic tells AD PRO. He used a limited palette of chartreuse and dark hues that nod to the brick exterior and arranged benches to create intimate seating areas within the larger English-garden-inspired space. A palette of whites, deep blues, and gold creates an elegant atmosphere in the formal living room, which was designed by Rachel Duarte. The designer established two seating areas within the space, including a cozy gathering spot with chaise longues that flank the original carved marble fireplace. The room’s coffered ceilings were enhanced with a faux-wood decorative painting by Jhon Ardilla. The name Assembledge+ was deliberately chosen to convey the firm’s passion for “assembling” all the often-complex elements of the design process to produce an architecture that is precise, considered, and of exceptional quality.

Where the neighboring structures differ is in their shape, while the NASM buildings were realized as a succession of boxy volumes, the forthcoming Bezos Learning Center will have a rounded form. The United States Commission of Fine Arts (CFA), alongside the Smithsonian Institution and Perkins&Will, shared new information and design renderings in the Concept Phase Project Report Submission last week. The report delves into the Smithsonian’s preferred design choices when it comes to facade detailing and landscaping.

The Center’s third floor will be home to a covered rooftop terrace—a first in the city—with food and beverage service. The roof itself will be topped with 100,000 square feet of hybrid photovoltaic solar collectors that produce electricity and hot water for the facility. Hoisted above the roof is an event space with panoramic city and ocean views dubbed the Belvedere.

The housing scenery is an accumulation of intricately designed forms that could easily be considered settings from out of this world. Los Angeles is arguably regarded as the capital of the film and television industry. The sprawling city is the epicenter of theatricality and luxury of the Western world. The cinematic scenery, the countless studio setups as well as the historic movie palaces have all imbued the cultural identity of Los Angeles with the ‘cinematic flare’, and architecture is no exception. Cal Poly Pomona architecture students give thirty-minute guided tours of the house and its temporary exhibits on Saturdays from 11 am to 3 pm, except for holiday weekends when students are not available. The Cinerama Dome (6360 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood) was designed as a prototype for what was supposed to be a series of dome cinemas around the country, based on R.

Welton Becket also designed the three original buildings of the Los Angeles Music Center. You can't really get a good drive by view of the Getty Center on it's hilltop perch in Brentwood. Students will need to bring their own laptop and charging cord with Windows 11 or 10 or Mac OS 13+ (Ventura), 12+ (Monterey) and 11+ (Big Sur) for this class.

The firm’s portfolio encompasses a range of building types and sizes that have been widely recognized for their technological, material, and sustainable intelligence, as well as their spatial fluidity, quality of light and social significance. Pfeiffer, a Perkins Eastman Studio, is a design firm of architects, interior designers and planners, with offices in downtown Los Angeles and New York City. The firm works nationally and internationally with an emphasis on cultural and educational projects for both public and private clients. Its projects marry smart planning with unusually effective client and team engagement for imaginative architectural solutions.

Nods to Pasadena’s famous peacocks can be found throughout the designs, and many creators fearlessly brought in statement floors, enveloped their spaces with jewel tones, and added texture to ceilings. Others focused on bringing the beauty of the estate’s gardens and views inside with verdant murals, floral fabrics, and nature-inspired lighting. With more than 30,000 architecture firms and over 130,000 projects within its database, Architizer is proud to host the world’s largest online community of architects and building product manufacturers. Its celebrated A+Awards program is also the largest celebration of architecture and building products, with more than 400 jurors and hundreds of thousands of public votes helping to recognize the world’s best architecture each year. Home to iconic landmarks such as Frank Gehry’s Walt Disney Concert Hall and Richard Meier’s Getty Center, Los Angeles’ architecture has become greatly influenced by the entertainment industry.

A new apprenticeship program will allow City Colleges of Chicago students to gain real-world experience in the lucrative real estate industry. Elsewhere on the site, the forthcoming Phoebe Waterman Haas Observatory will be positioned at the intersection of 4th Street SW and Independence Avenue. Like its neighboring structures the architecture of the observatory will be designed in line with the NASM and the Bezos Learning Center. Inside the domed observatory, star gazers can peer through the relocated 1960’s Boller and Chivens 16-inch telescope.
